Sermon for Advent 2

Romans 15:4-13  +  Luke 21:25-36

Most people don’t think the world is going to end in judgment, with Jesus literally coming back to the world to put an end to it. And they live like they don’t think judgment is coming, as if they didn’t have to answer to the Judge at all. Now, many are convinced that the earth will be destroyed, but they think mankind is going to destroy the planet, or maybe an asteroid will do it, or a solar event, and that mankind’s only hope of survival is becoming a multi-planetary species. (I think that’s what Elon Musk has suggested.) Even among those who do believe that God is going to bring this world to an end, many are under the impression that there’s going to be some apocalyptic event, a global disaster, or “Armageddon,” or “Rapture,” or a sinister world leader stepping forward as the Antichrist to crush the Gospel, before the day of judgment comes, so that, when these things happen, it’ll be obvious to everyone that the end is about to come. And so they think they’ll have time to prepare, when they see those catastrophic events taking place.

But think back to what Paul wrote in the Epistle just two weeks ago: For you yourselves know perfectly well that the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as birth pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will surely not escape. Or remember what Jesus Himself said: As the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. That means that most people will have no clue that the end of the world is upon them, until it is upon them!

Christians are also left not knowing when the end will come, but Christ’s coming shouldn’t surprise us, as it will the unbelieving world. It shouldn’t come as something totally unexpected to us, because Jesus has given us things to watch for, reminding us to expect His coming, and to expect it at any time, so that, when we see the Son of Man coming in power and great glory, we won’t say, “Oh, I had no idea He might come today!”, but instead, “Yes! I thought He just might come today!” What if Jesus does come back today? You want to be able to stand before Him, if He does, to survive His coming and to go with Him into eternal life. In order for that to happen, Jesus tells you and all His disciples in today’s Gospel: Always watch and pray, that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will take place and to stand before the Son of Man.

Part of “watching” is recognizing the signs that Jesus gives us, pointing us toward His second Advent. Today’s Gospel from Luke 21 includes a few of those signs, and when we add the signs recorded earlier in Luke’s Gospel and in Matthew’s and Mark’s Gospel, we see the fuller picture that the Holy Spirit has painted for us. We’re to look for signs in three different areas: in nature, in society, and in the Church.

In nature, Jesus speaks of signs in the sun, moon, and stars, fearful sights and great signs from heaven. Great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences. The sea and the waves will roar. All pandemics and natural disasters are included among those signs, along with anything strange or out of the ordinary happening up in the heavens, or below on the earth, changes in the atmosphere, in the weather, in the climate, in the crops that are grown. The world draws its own false conclusions about all those things, but Christians should know better. When we hear of strange or fearful or destructive things happening in nature—and they happen all the time!—we should recognize them as signs pointing to Jesus’ coming, and we should remember to be watchful for that great day.

In society, Jesus speaks of signs like wars and rumors of wars. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. Lawlessness will abound. Christians will be hated and persecuted. When we hear about such things happening—and they happen all the time!—we should recognize them as signs pointing to Jesus’ coming, and we should remember to be watchful for that great day.

In the Church, Jesus speaks of signs like these: Many [Christians] will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. There will be a great falling away from the faith. The love of many will grow cold. Many false prophets will arise, and many people will be deceived by them. The man of lawlessness himself, also known as the Antichrist, will arise—not within the world governments but within the Christian Church!—and cause many to fall away. And, finally, the Gospel will be preached to all the nations.

Now, which of those things hasn’t happened yet? Most of them have happened and continue to happen repeatedly throughout history, continually reminding God’s people to watch and pray. The only sign people still get confused about is who or what the Antichrist is, but when we put together the passages of Scripture that talk about him, it’s clear that it isn’t just one man who will arise close to the end of the world. It’s an institution, represented by a man, that has its origins going back almost to the time of the apostles themselves. And when we compare the teachings and practices of the Roman Papacy to Holy Scripture, it becomes evident that the papacy is, at very least, a clear manifestation of the Antichrist. And if anyone doubts that the Antichrist has already been around for a while, consider this: Can anyone really question the fact that the solid, Christ-centered, Biblical foundation of the outward Christian Church around the world has already been decimated? Look at the state of Biblical Christianity today! What further damage could a future Antichrist do to the Church than that which has already been done? So, clearly all the signs pointing to Jesus’ coming are there before our very eyes, leaving us Christians without excuse, screaming at us every day, “Jesus is coming! Watch and pray that you may be ready if He comes back today!”

So, part of watching is recognizing those signs that are all around us and constantly remind us to be ready. Another part of watching is not letting your heart be weighed down by earthly pleasures or earthly concerns. Jesus said in today’s Gospel, Be on your guard, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you unexpectedly. For it will come like a snare upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

Now, Jesus is talking to Christians, here, not unbelievers. He already knows the unbelieving world is focused on their earthly life, because they don’t know the true God or believe in the future He has foretold. They don’t acknowledge their sinfulness and their need for a Savior. They don’t know the love of the Father, who gave His only-begotten Son to suffer and die for the sins of mankind, that all might believe in Him, and be saved from sin and from the coming judgment. Their hearts have not been remade and renewed through faith in Christ Jesus, so of course their hearts are weighed down and bound tightly to this earth. But Christians have come to know the love of God. We have put our faith in the redeeming work of Jesus, our Savior. If we belong to Him, then we walk according to His Spirit and have our hearts set on Him and on His imminent return. That’s where our hearts are set by the Holy Spirit Himself. But the flesh, the sinful nature that we still carry around with us, isn’t interested in Jesus, or God’s will, or a heavenly inheritance. The flesh is still earthbound and always will be, and that’s why it’s so easy for us to be weighed down by earthly pleasures and earthly concerns, by earthly goals and earthly desires.

But Christians are not enslaved by the flesh. We are not ruled by it or controlled by it. We are not at its mercy, as if we had no choice but to have our hearts weighed down. No, God has given us His Spirit, who uses the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel to wrench our hearts away from earthly things and sinful things and lifts our gaze heavenward again.

So walk with the Spirit! Watch and pray, so that if Jesus does come back today, you’ll be ready. At every party you attend, at every function, be ready. At work every day, at home, at school, be ready. At every funeral, during every hospital stay, on your deathbed, be ready. Be watching. Remind yourself that Jesus may well come back today, so that, if He does, you’re not caught unaware or unprepared, giving in to temptation, joining in with the world in its never-ending celebration of depravity, of itself, but looking to the Lord Jesus as your sure hope of eternal life.

And part of watching and being ready is using the amazing gift God has given you in the Holy Scriptures. God’s Word is that which prepares us for Christ’s advent, both His first advent and His second. Listen again to what Paul said in today’s Epistle about the Scriptures: Whatever was written before was written for our learning, so that, through patience and the comfort of the Scriptures, we might have hope. God wants you to have hope. He’s given you everything you need to stay watchful, to stay vigilant, to be ready for your Savior’s return, in His written Word, in His preached Word, in His visible Word, namely, the Holy Sacraments. Use the gifts He has given to make you ready for His arrival. Expect Jesus to return today, every day. And on the day when He finally does—which may be today!—you’ll be able to stand up straight and lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing near! Amen.

Sermon for Advent 2

Romans 15:4-13  +  Luke 21:25-36

The King is coming! Believe it or not! Like it or not! The King is coming! Jesus is coming! And He will come with judgment for the world and with deliverance for His Church—deliverance from this rotting world, with its violence, with its injustice, with its rampant idolatry and its incessant worship of self, deliverance from sin and from every evil. So, in order for the King to come with deliverance for you—instead of judgment—you need to be found within His Church. You need to be prepared. You need to be living in daily contrition and repentance, watching out for anything that might weigh your heart down and keep it bound to this life, to this rotting world and to the sin that infects it like gangrene. And so, long ago, the King gave His beloved Church certain signs to keep us watchful and ready, signs that point to His imminent arrival, which will bring an end to this world as we know it.

Jesus says in today’s Gospel, And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. That’s what comes at the end of the signs, the Son of Man coming with power and great glory. The King, the Lord Jesus, came in His first advent, not in glory, but in humility. He came the first time to live as one of us, to live under His Father’s Law as our Substitute, to suffer and die in our place, and to offer sinners a time of grace, a time during which sinners are not immediately judged and cast away and destroyed. That time is now! Now is the time to come into the Christian Church and to remain here! But that time will run out. It could run out at any time! And it will be exactly the opposite when Jesus comes again. He’ll come in glory, not to live as one of us but to be King over all. He’ll come, not to offer sinners one last chance, but to put an end to all chances to repent and to escape judgment. When the King comes, there will be no more time to change, to be born again, to turn from sin, and to receive His free forgiveness through faith in Christ Jesus. That means that now is the time to watch and prepare!

But the longer you watch for something that doesn’t come, the harder it is to keep watching. So the King gave us signs—repeating signs, negative signs, for the most part—to keep us from getting caught up in this earthly life. There are three categories of signs given to us by Jesus. Some are given in Luke’s Gospel, others in Matthew and Mark: Signs in nature, signs in society, and signs in the Christian Church.

The signs in nature are these: There will be signs in the sun and the moon and the stars. The sea and the waves will roar. There will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. The powers of heaven will be shaken. We see irregular things like these happening all the time in nature, in the heavens, in the weather, in the climate. Unbelievers interpret them very differently, though, don’t they? They turn to fallible human science for causes and for solutions. They use every climate event to promote an agenda that will actually bring further harm to humanity. We Christians, on the other hand, should take all the irregular, frightening events that happen in nature as signs of the King’s imminent arrival. Are those events happening more often now than they did in the past? Will they get worse and worse leading up to the end? Will there be more spectacular signs in the heavens than what we currently see? Maybe. Or maybe not. The point is, whenever you see or hear about irregular events in nature, don’t be frightened. Instead, remember that Jesus is coming soon! And make sure you’re ready!

The signs in society are these: On the earth there will be distress and anxiety among the nations. —how much has the suicide rate increased over the last several years? Men will lose heart from fear and dread of the things that are coming on the world. Doesn’t it seem like people are constantly filled with fear over…something that’s coming, fear that the next shoe will soon drop? You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. Israel, Syria, Ukraine, Russia, Iran, China—wars and rumors of wars are a recurring theme in human history, right up to this day. They will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. Christians have been hated and persecuted since the days of the apostles. Now, when Christians behave badly or teach falsely, they bring some of that trouble on themselves. But often it’s just the routine speaking and living the truth of the Gospel of Christ that gets Christians hated. There have been times of reprieve in various places. Most Christians in the United States weren’t hated for being Christians—until more recently. Now, to uphold Christian values and the Bible’s teachings and, more importantly, to confess the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ makes a person practically an enemy of the state. Lawlessness will abound, and the love of many will grow cold. This is happening throughout the world. Here in our country, how many thousands are lawlessly streaming across the border now every single day? How much lawlessness fills the streets of our cities, with drugs and crime running rampant? And the politicians often lawlessly support the lawlessness. And, because of it, many people grow jaded and cynical and, tragically, loveless themselves.

Finally, there are the signs within the Christian Church: Many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Jesus is talking there about Christians. Many who once confessed the Christian faith will stumble, will fall away, and then betray one another and hate one another. The outward, visible Christian Church, by all standards of measurement, is a huge mess and is in a steep decline. There has been much stumbling, much falling away, and much betrayal and hatred. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. Every different denomination within Christianity exists because of false prophets and false doctrine, and because many, many people have been deceived by them.

Now, when you see all that, you’re tempted to throw up your hands and say, “What’s the point of joining a Christian church at all, then?” But listen to what Jesus says. These things are not signs that He has lost control of His Church, or that the Church is pointless. He told us ahead of time that things would be this way—in the world and in the Church. And His message to us is not, “You might as well give up!” or, “Don’t bother with the Church! Just stay home!” No, His message is, When these things begin to happen, stand up straight and lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing near! Now, yes, it’s true, most of these things have been going on here and there during the entire New Testament period. But it seems to me that they are more widespread and more frequent now than they have ever been. So, Christians, stand up straight and lift up your heads, because that’s where the Lord Jesus will come from! Let Him be your focus, and not anything here below! Notice the signs! And use them for their divinely intended purpose: to shake you out of your slumber, to cause you to watch and to prepare for the Lord’s coming!

Jesus adds a saying that has a few possible interpretations. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all this takes place. That could mean that all the signs Jesus talked about would begin to take place already during the lifetime of “that generation” of people, and on a small scale, one could say that they did. But in the Gospels, especially in Matthew’s Gospel, when Jesus uses the term “this generation,” He’s referring to the group of unbelieving Jews. And some have interpreted this saying as a prediction that the unbelieving Jews, as a distinct group, would remain on the earth until Jesus comes again. So, the existence of modern Israel, far from proving that they are still God’s chosen people, actually serves as a sign of its own, as a warning to all people not to forfeit the gift of salvation as they have, as a fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy concerning their perpetual unbelief, proving that, though heaven and earth pass away, Jesus’ words will never pass away.

But Jesus issues a more direct warning in our Gospel: But be on your guard, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you unexpectedly. For it will come like a snare upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Jesus doesn’t want His Christians to get caught in the snare. He doesn’t want us to be caught unprepared when the King comes and to be caught up with the rest of the world in the judgment and the punishment that is coming. So He warns us: Watch out! Be on your guard! Because, what can easily happen, even to Christians? Your hearts can become weighed down, either with indulging in sinful pleasures, like carousing and drunkenness, pornography and adultery and sex outside of marriage, or with the “cares of this life,” which may not be sinful in and of themselves—tending to your job, or your education, or your family, or your house, or your clothes, or your diet, or your health, or the news, or the next election, or your car repairs, or—well, the list of cares is endless, isn’t it? There’s a lot that can weigh your heart down and turn your attention away from the Word of God, away from living in repentance, away from seeking God’s forgiveness in Christ, away from preparing for His coming.

Therefore, always watch and pray, that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will take place and to stand before the Son of Man.

Always watch and pray. That means that now is the time to watch and pray, to watch and prepare. Now, today. And tomorrow. And the next day. Take Jesus’ words to heart! He has sent them to you today as a gift! Repent and believe in Him for the forgiveness of sins! And every time you see or hear any of the signs we’ve talked about today, let it serve as another reminder to repent, to believe, and to look up! Amen.

Signs that the Day is near

Sermon for Populus Sion – Advent 2

Romans 15:4-13  +  Luke 21:25-36

Where is planet earth headed? What’s coming for our human race? There seems to be a growing uneasiness in men’s hearts about the future of our world. Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking—an atheist—recently gave our planet an expiration date, more or less. Within a thousand years, he says, the earth will be uninhabitable for humans. So we’d better get to Mars and figure out how to colonize inhospitable planets! We’d better find another home, somewhere in the galaxy, because this one’s days are numbered!

A lot of people know, or sense, that something dreadful is coming. Apocalyptic visions of catastrophe and destruction, either for our race, or for our planet, or both, are commonplace. Whether it’s due to climate change, or war, an unfortunately aimed asteroid, the loss of the ozone layer, solar radiation, the degradation of earth’s magnetic field, super volcanoes, or alien invasion, the people of earth seem to suspect that something dreadful is coming on the earth.

Of course, we Christians know their suspicions are warranted. Something dreadful is coming—the Day of the Lord, when He comes for judgment, to wipe out, not just the earth, but the heavens, too. And leading up to that dreadful Day, there will be any number of signs, which the Lord Christ told us about nearly 2,000 years ago.

What should we be watching for, leading up to that dreadful Day? What are these signs? Luke’s Gospel mentions several of them, and Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 24, mentions others. Combined, there are nine signs that should keep us awake, focused and ready for the Day of the Lord—nine signs that sound the alarm: The end of the age is coming!

#1: There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars. What does that mean? Asteroids? Sun spots? Solar and lunar eclipses? Supernovae—stars exploding? Maybe. If so, we’ve been seeing these signs for a long time. But Matthew’s Gospel puts these signs in the heavens at the end, after the other things have taken place, just as the Last Day arrives. He writes: Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven. So I’m of the opinion that the heavenly signs Jesus refers to won’t happen until the very end.

#2: There will be distress of nations, with perplexity. Anguish and anxiety, stress and unrest. Not for everyone, not all the time. But enough that it’s noticeable. Have you noticed a growing amount of anguish and anxiety in the world, stress and unrest? It’s not hard to find.

#3: The sea and the waves roaring. To those signs in nature, Matthew adds earthquakes, famines and pestilences. Heard of any of those things recently?

#4: In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of wars and rumors of wars, nation rising up against nation and kingdom against kingdom. Tell me a time when that hasn’t been around! When I was growing up, several conflicts and two World Wars had already come and gone just in the 20th Century, and it was the Cold War and the constant rumor of WWIII and nuclear holocaust. Today it’s cyberwarfare, the Middle East, monetary crises, and growing tensions among the super powers.

#5 Men’s hearts fainting from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth. Do you see that happening? The suicide rate just keeps rising. The global panic over global warming—or is it global cooling? or is it climate change? Over the past 40 years the terms have changed, and the end of life on earth has been predicted multiple times. It’s a wonder we’re still here! To be frank, many climate change alarmists are just hypocrites pushing an insidious agenda to cripple capitalism and to promote socialism and fascism. But many are truly alarmed. Their hearts are fainting from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth. They just don’t believe what Jesus says about what’s really coming on the earth.

#6: Matthew writes that Christians will be hated, persecuted, and put to death. We saw such rabid hatred of Christians in the first few centuries after Christ. We saw it again, to a degree, at the time of the Reformation. But I would suggest that never before in the Christian era has Christianity been as widely and as openly hated as it is today. And you can think of all sorts of examples, big and small, from creation-believing students being ridiculed by their teachers, to bakers and photographers being fined, to synodical suspensions of pastors, to Christians in other parts of the world having their heads removed and their bodies burned. See the signs for what they are.

#7: Matthew mentions the great dissemination of false doctrine and false prophets, many Christians falling away from the faith and many being deceived. There have always been plenty of false teachings and idols in the world. But this false doctrine is a sign within the external Christian Church. It’s true, some churches split over non-doctrinal reasons. But the vast majority of Christian confessions or denominations around the world exist because of differences in doctrine. And any doctrine that is different than that which was passed down to us from the Prophets and Apostles, working under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is false and even demonic. The very existence of so many different churches is a sign that Christ is coming soon.

#8: Jesus says that lawlessness will abound, and because of it, the love of most will grow cold. We see such things happening. We see the lawless side, for example, when people target and kill police officers and loot and burn down businesses. We also see love growing cold as people react to such lawlessness with hatred and rage of their own.

And finally, #9, the one sign of Christ’s coming that’s pure and pleasant and sweet: Jesus says, This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. Well, look at that! The Gospel of Christ is still being preached. It has reached into all the world, and it will continue to be preached until the end of the world, no matter how much the devil and the world try to snuff it out.

All the signs are there: this world is coming to a close. The leaves on the fig tree have sprouted. Summer is almost here. None of the signs that we see taking place should give us reason either to fear, or to complain, or to indulge in self-pity—or worse, in revenge. None of it. None of the signs that we see taking place around us should cause us to panic or to try to reverse the course of the world or to save the planet. The planet is unsalvageable. Our race is unsalvageable, un-savable—

Except for the one and only salvation that God Himself has provided: that all men should repent, believe in Christ crucified, and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins, now, before it’s too late, before the great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. And for those who have been baptized, God continues to provide for our salvation with daily forgiveness of sins in His Church, with the preaching and teaching of His Word, with the Holy Supper that gives us the body and blood of Jesus to keep renewing us in faith, in hope, and in love all the way up to the day of His coming.

But what can happen? Men can reject the Word of Christ, even those who were once counted among His people. We have a vivid reminder of that held before our eyes: Jesus says, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place.

To what generation was He referring? Clearly many generations of men have come and gone since then without the end having come. For the most part, the phrase “this generation” in the Gospels refers to the unbelieving Jews, the physical descendants of Israel who were once the Church of God, but then stopped being the Church of God when they refused to believe that Jesus was God’s Son and their promised Messiah, when they refused to repent and look to Him for salvation. Many of them have been converted to Christianity, but many more remain unconverted and hardened in their unbelief, and you can expect them to remain in that state until the end of the world, as a tragic warning for Christians of what happens when you’re not ready for Christ’s coming.

Heaven and earth will pass away, Jesus says. Sorry, Stephen Hawking, Mars and the rest of the galaxy will offer no shelter from that day. It’s not only the earth that will be destroyed. Heaven and earth will pass away. But My words will by no means pass away. Isn’t that the reason to keep hearing and learning the Word of Christ? His words will outlast even the earth itself. His promises will never fall. His truth will never change or become obsolete.

In that Word, Jesus pleads urgently with His dear people, But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Carousing can include partying, becoming obsessed with sports, entertainment, obsessed with food, obsessed with clothing and style. Drunkenness includes overindulgence in drink, in drugs, in sex. Cares of this life includes just about everything else: technology, education, career, retirement, buying Christmas presents, etc. It’s easy to become weighed down with all these things and to put the Last Day on the back burner of your heart.

So watch and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man. How do you escape all these things? By being preserved in faith and in watchfulness until the end, whether that end means our death before the Last Day, or our being preserved in faith if we’re still alive on earth when the Last Day finally comes. How do you stand before the Son of Man? By faith in Him who died for us and rose again. That’s all. Faith in Him now will make us worthy to stand before Him then. And for those who believe in Christ Jesus, there is nothing to fear or dread on the Day of His coming. Instead, Jesus says, When these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near. Christ, our Redeemer, has already paid for our sins and reconciled us with God through faith and made us children of God through Holy Baptism. Only the final redemption awaits, when this planet is destroyed and the rest of the human race is cast out into eternal torment. For those who are found believing in Christ at His coming, there will be no punishment and no condemnation. Only the redemption of our bodies, the destruction of sin and death, and the beginning of a new and glorious life in the New Jerusalem, the home of righteousness. Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
